A 12@12NOON excerpt...

COFFEE BEAN

By Sally Marshall Evans

SCREEN 1

I hadn’t seen him since he was in a newborn cap in the hospital.  I was 15.  His mom’s name was on the blue card on his crib.  Vasquez.

SCREEN 6

He’s 5, standing here in front of me now.  His mom was hit by a car.  Her family wanted to keep him.  And I said no.  I was his dad.

12@12NOON is a series of scenes consisting of 12 lines written by award-winning playwrights and delivered via SMS text to phones and mobile devices. The range of the stories, worlds, and key characters is quite expansive, and potentially endless, yet each scene is succinct and complete.

Our playwrights write high quality dramatic scenes that rises above material currently available on the internet. And it is with delight that we ask users to join us and continue the story by writing their own 12-line scenes, which theater professionals will read!

A 12 LINE WONDER excerpt...

THE GREAT REPUBLIC

By Ella Powell Horne

The woods, a clearing, you can hear a brook nearby.  GEMMA, 17, sits on a log, alone, warming her hands.  A long, piercing whistle.

SCREEN 1

GEMMA

Akil.  Great lungs, can hear him for miles. They’re here, ten boys.  Hiding.  Sea Scout Troupe #209, my team. I'm their troupe leader.

SCREEN 2

AKIL

(spotlight on AKIL & JASON)

Let’s jump out and scare the crap out of her!  (JASON whispers in his ear) That’s even better!

12@12NOON's educational counterpart, 12 LINE WONDER, also delivers 12-line dramatic scenes to students on their mobile devices and each scene is accompanied by a lesson plan in the Teacher Portal, discussion questions, and a quiz. One line of dialogue appears on each screen, and students swipe to get to the next line.

Students:

1. SEE a Graphics Screen that gives the time, place, and characters;

2. READ one line of literate, compelling dialogue on its own screen;

3. EXPLORE content based on curriculum materials, goals, and objectives and;

4. WRITE their own 12-line scene inspired by the scene they’ve just read.

The apps are interactive and at the end of each scene, there is a call to action for students and users to write their own 12-line scene, using the characters and circumstances as a starting point.

Both apps are available in App Store and Google Play

Latest News

12@12NOON and 12 LINE WONDER shift the paradigm of theater. Patrons receive the written text, 12-line scenes FIRST, and then are invited to free performances of the scenes in “third places.” These “third places” are casual performance venues such as coffee houses, ice cream parlors, and community centers— words, actors, the electricity of live performance.

The traditions of the African griot, the religious pageant, performed during medieval times on wagons traveling from town to town, and kathakalaskshepa, Indian stories told in Sanskrit or Hindu involving music, dance, and multiple digressions, all take the place within the community instead of depending upon the community coming to one single place at a particular time to see a performance.

12 LINE WONDER Lands First Client!

BWPG's Educational App -- 12 LINE WONDER recently won its first client, partnering with the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) for a Fall 2021 launch.

Described by Alan Katz in DC Theater Scene as "the technological game changer for theater in the 21st century,"

12 LINE WONDER takes its users into the inner workings of the playwrights' world through intricately mastered 12-line scenes that appear on the student's phone or mobile device.

The classes incorporating 12 LINE WONDER at UDC will be led by Dr. Dorothy Phaire and Dr. Christian Aguiar for the Foundations in Writing and Creative Writing courses. The themes that the scenes will explore include social issues such as poverty, LGBTQ, immigrant experiences, and the Black Lives Matter movement.  The app has been integrated into Blackboard™, one of the largest LMS (learning management systems) in the country.

For more information, contact Stacey Palmer, CEO, Executive Virtual Assistance, at 240-355-8189 or spalmer@executiveva.net.  Additional information can also be obtained at www.blackwomenplaywrights.org.
